First of all, congratulations! It's an overwhelming, emotional, and joyful time for you! A brand new little life just turned your world upside down in the most wonderful way!
Your tired with the new baby schedule and your emotions are all over the place, Ive' been there...twice and I totally get that. Sometimes the last thing on your mind is trying to schedule a newborn session when all you can think about is feedings, changing diapers and most of all sleep. That's why I always tell my clients to schedule me ahead of time before the baby is born, that way we can talk about what you want ahead of the baby arriving and get all the details and props in advance.
My newborn sessions are in the comfort of your home and are super laid back and relaxed.
scroll down for a few helpful tips and answers to some questions you may have.
When does the session take place?
It is important to have the session within the baby's first 12 days of life, if possible. After two weeks of age, babies are more likely to be disturbed while sleeping, sleep for shorter periods of time, and usually baby acne begins after this time.Ideally we want to get newborn photos from 5-7 days old.
When should I schedule my session?
I recommend booking around your 5th or 6th month of pregnancy, of course the sooner the better, but this is an ideal time. When we first speak we will do a "soft booking". This means we use your due date as your session date, then once you deliver you will contact me and we will schedule your exact session date and time.
How should I prepare my baby for the shoot?
On the morning of the shoot it is advisable to try and keep baby awake for as long as possible before the shoot. After their first morning feeding when they first wake, keep baby stimulated and awake by bathing them, letting them kick and keep moving around. Delay the next feed until just before I arrive, leaving enough time to feed baby before I get there. Babies take around 20 minutes to fall into a deep, settled sleep, which is perfect for our scheduled arrival time.
What do I need for the session
There really is very little you will need for the photo shoot, except your gorgeous newborn! I have a wide variety of beautiful, tasteful props, which will incorporate different themes and colors for me to create a variety of different looks. Most photographs are done using my props or nude. You can however warm up your home, set it at least 70 degrees or a touch warmer, yes it will be warm for us, but the baby will sleep better without waking as easily. Space heaters are another way to warn up the room as well.
If you are planning on a sibling to be in the photos please bring something to keep them amused. Newborn sessions can take up to 4 hours so it would be advisable to allow Dad or another family member to take your older child out or amused once we have photographed them, as they can get restless.
How long should I plan for my session?
Newborn photo shoots can take anywhere from 2-4 hours, depending on how settled baby is. I always allow for at least 3 hours for each newborn photo shoot to ensure there is plenty of time to stop for feeds and changes. Your newborn photo session should be a relaxed and enjoyable experience, baby will always lead the session. If you follow all the advice on here you will maximize the success of your newborn's photo shoot.
I found some ideas on poses , can we use them ?
Yes of coarse we can attempt them with your baby but we may only get a few of those poses you screen shot because every baby is not the same, some will easily go into the special poses but not all of them will. Remember some of these poses such as the "froggy pose" are composites, this means these are images made in editing photoshop software of multiple shots composed into one . You must be willing to assist in these poses , because due to safety we will always have one hand on baby if not two at all times. Safety is number one with newborns. If the pose is not safe I will not attempt it and I will not force a baby to do a pose that they do not want to do.
Where will the session take place?
Your session will take place in the comfort of your home. Don't worry about space, light and furniture , when I first arrive I will find the best location for the shoot and I will move things around if need be, and I will as well put everything back as it was when we are done. Don't stress if your house is cluttered or a mess. I totally understand the laundry isn't done or the kids were playing earlier and left things about, I am a mom too and that is life! Your number one priority is you new baby , so relax and just enjoy watching me work my magic.
